Cheap Holiday and Travel Insurance » Information » Activity Travel Insurance Activity Travel InsuranceActivity travel insurance is required for anyone participating in any activities which are not covered on standard trip travel insurance or annual multi-trip insurance. Activity travel insurance can sometimes be referred to as Adventure Insurance. With the increase of extreme sports there is a growing demand for activity travel insurance. This will cover the participant in a variety of activities which can be split into two basic categories as follows:- ![]() American football, archery, ballooning, bouldering, bunjee jumping, expeditions and trekking, football, glacier crossing, gliding, hang gliding, high diving (platform only), hockey (field only), horse riding, jet skiing, marathon/ triathlon, martial arts, microlighting, parachuting, paragliding, parascending, potholing/caving [as part of a group only], power boating as a passenger, rock climbing, rugby, scrambling, show jumping, sky diving, water skiing, white water boating, white water rafting to level 4, canoeing, kayaking and yachting within territorial waters. A more dangerous list includes:- Canyoning, motor rallying, mountaineering, over-landing, piloting an aircraft, polo, scuba diving deeper than 30m, speed skating, white water rafting level 5, yachting out of territorial waters. Standard activity travel insurance policies will normally cover the riskier activities but with increased excesses in case of a medical claim. Normally activity travel insurance for the more risky activities is covered upon application and loadings may be applied, depending upon the individual's degree of experience, age and fitness. Activity travel insurance is provided specifically as a trip travel cover for the period of the activity or for the term of the trip policy with the incidental participation of the listed activities. If you plan to participate in potentially hazardous activities you should check with your trip travel or annual travel policy provider to see if the activities will be covered. You can take activity 'top up' cover from an activity travel insurance specialist before you travel. ![]() If you decide to participate in a hazardous activity whilst on holiday you should seek emergency cover for you, if it is available, but usually this is not the case and you will be uninsured. So take extra precautions and be sure you feel comfortable taking part. Ask for any training and preparation that is available and, if you feel unsure, be safe rather than in hospital and say no thank you. Unexpected injuries caused by taking part in an unscheduled hazardous activity can be more than just frightening, they can be horrendously expensive, as you may have to be flown to a specialist hospital to treat you if you are in a remote area. You must remember there is not NHS to protect you outside of the UK. The cost of activity insurance is pennies compared to the frightening cost of medical bills in some countries, especially USA where something as minor as a broken finger can cost hundreds of pounds. Activity travel insurance offers many other benefits besides the medical cover, such as lost passports, stolen or lost baggage, or delays. For what it costs it's simply an investment that's too cheap not to do. If you think you may be taking part in some potentially hazardous activities then you need to take an activity travel insurance policy and check with your current insurers to see if you policy will cover you.
